There was nobody to welcome us at the time of arrival until a few minutes later when members of the village began coming one after another. At the middle of the meeting, there were as many as 26 members. However, at the end, the meeting was quite warm and the number of attendees had gone up to 29 members.
Purpose of the visit
• To introduce the CVP program
Topics
1. Review of the handouts
• Institute - DIRA agreement
• Chronological Plot Management of Crops to be Planted in 2012
• Frequent asked question
2. Delivery
We gave them a box file for record keeping of the demonstration plots
3. Historical background of the village
Igumbilo village is situated at the bottom of the escarpments on the highway to Dar es Salaam from Iringa town. It has 840 households and a population of 4,300. The population is of great diversity as it was leant from the attendees. People came from different denominations and administrative levels of the village government officials as well. They grow mainly corn, beans, cowpeas and groundnuts. Types of fertilizers used include DAP, Urea, CAN and manure from cattle. Average yield of corn is 2 – 5 bags per acre and 40 – 100kg for beans per acre. The amount of rainfall received per year is somewhat erratic from year to year. According to the village members, there was adequate rainfall in 2010 and less rainfall in 2011. In 2012, there was good amount of rainfall in January followed by a 3 week dry spell in February and resumed back in March.
Questions from audience
You said that the 2nd application of fertilizer should take place when corn plants are knee-high, in some cases plants may take too long to reach that height, what do you advice?
In my explanation, knee – high refers to growth of corn plants attained after 60 days. Therefore, you can count 60 days from germination up to the time you do 2nd application of fertilizers.
Does 60 day 2nd application refer to a crop which was planted without fertilizer?
No, the application of fertilizer after 60 days refers to crop plants which were fertilized at the time of planting and need to be fertilized again after 60 days (knee – high) because by then fertilizer strength is declining.
Does the spacing of 60cm by 20cm refer to all varieties of corn?
Yes, in our case, the spacing of 60 cm by 20cm is recommended to the corn varieties grown in upland as well as to the varieties grown in the lowland.
Don’t you think too much crop residues left on ground may impede planting and subsequent farm operations such as weeding?
No, crop residues properly handled should not be a problem to subsequent farm operations. We shall demonstrate on how to place crop residues when time comes. We only request you to leave crop residues on ground after harvesting. Do not burn it. Pastor Nixon from Ipogoro Parish was invited to explain how he handles crop residues on the parish’s demo plot and his farm. He explained that it was possible to handle crop residues without burning and without impeding any subsequent farm operations. He explained the importance of crop residues to the soil and subsequent crop as adding organic matter to the soil, conserving soil moisture, adding plant nutrients and suppressing weeds.
4. Conclusion
The program was warmly received and accepted. Attendees showed a great interest on the program. They were ready to follow the instructions. They were also advised to consult their Parish for SACCOS matters since there is a SACCOS program going on there.

Discussion and conclusion
At the time of the visit, they were weeding their bean plot. Both corn and bean plants were correctly spaced and in good condition. They showed a great interest on learning the taught agricultural practices and asked several questions about corn and beans. We answered their questions and advised them to apply fertilizer on corn as soon as they can.
When asked about adoption of the taught methods on their own farms, 4 out of 14 (28.5%) said they were practicing the methods in their own plots. Their demonstration plots are positioned along the road towards the church. This position makes passersby to look at and ask questions on the seed they used and methods they apply to the corn and beans to look that good.

Conclusion
Corn germination in their field was poor, they had replanted. When asked what they thought was the cause for the poor germination, they thought it was fertilizer burn. Part of the failure comes from the fact that it was their first time to join the CVP program. Therefore, emphasis on the placement of fertilizer 5cm away from the seed was particularly important to them since it is their first time to join the program.

They thought the yield doubled and tripled in some cases. When asked how many members are adopting the new practices, 4/8 (which is 50%) said they were adopting in small plots because they had less money to buy fertilizers. However, the major hindrance for good CVP program performance in this Parish is drought which is a common phenomenon.

4th Visit 4
January, 23.2012
Village Nyanzwa
Pastor Luhwano Mwafute
Companion Easter Lutheran
Attendees 09
Weather for the past month Hot & Dry
Reporters Venance, Rev. Mang’ulisa, and Edman
Upon arrival, we were welcomed by the parish pastor, 5 other church members, 2 primary school teachers and the extension worker of the village. This area is among areas which suffer from drought; therefore part of its corn field is grown with sorghum; plants around looked wilting. After introductions, we went through the guideline as follows;
Purpose of the visit
1. Review of the handouts, 4th visit instructions
• Discussion about germination, Replanting and Pest control
• Monthly weeding before planting
• Monthly weeding after tasseling
2. Demonstration on second fertilizer application on corn. Demonstration on planting and fertilization of beans on rows 30cm apart and 10cm between plants.
3. Insecticide Application. We instructed them on how to apply the insecticide on both corn and beans and the recommended rates to apply.
4. Delivery.
We delivered been seeds, fertilizers and one liter of Thionex 35 EC insecticide.
Item Beans Fertilizers for Corn Fertilizers for beans
Variety Macia and wanja Urea NPK
Amount 1 Bag 2 bags
Members had some questions which needed answers. They asked about the pre - harvest period for bean leaves to be used as a vegetable after insecticide application and the answer came from manufacturer’s instruction that for beans the pre – harvest period is 2 – 4 days.
Also they had a comment about the mode of applying N fertilizer on corn. They thought applying in a complete circle would be more appropriate. My answer was applying N fertilizer in a complete circle is the most appropriate only that it is laborious, if farmers can do it, it is OK.
NB. Bean seeds to be sent before March.
Conclusion
Members were reminded to follow correct spacing, do monthly weeding and apply correct amount of insecticide at the right time.
When asked about whether they apply the agricultural practices taught in the demo plot in their personal plots, 4/9 present (44%) said they have started to apply the practices though their major limitation is inability to purchase fertilizers. But generally their major limitation is drought condition which is prevalent in their area.

Corn and Bean Plots Discussion
The corn plot has been planted. The plan was to plant two varieties, local varieties and improved varieties. The local variety failed to germinate hence the replant was done with improved varieties. Thus, the whole plot is planted with improved varieties, with few plants of local variety mixed within. We instructed them to do weeding as soon as possible. Beans will be planted sometimes in February
Pyrethrum
Pyrethrum will be transplanted in February. The pyrethrum plot has been selected but not yet prepared. We instructed them to till the land and prepare the soil for the transplanting in February.
Questions
Where the pyrethrum seedlings are going to come from?
Usually PCT establish seedlings nurseries in the village. There nurseries even here in the village. The seedlings which are going to be used in the demonstration plot will come from these nurseries
There are insects cutting the bean plants especially when plants reach flowering stage. How should we control that?
Those insects are called bean maggot. Spray pesticides 3 – 5 days after germination to kill the flies which come to lay eggs that will develop into maggot when plants are about to flower.
Conclusion
Although there were problems with the germination we told them to keep on following instructions. We hope the bean plot and pyrethrum will do better than corn plot. We instructed them to keep their plots clean from weeds.

Questions/Comments from Audience
We know that we are instructed to apply fertilizers 60 days after planting. What should we do when 60days have reached and the plants are not tall enough to be applied fertilizers?
If after 60 days the plants are not tall enough, keep on waiting for a while. Probably the growth has been slow due to lack of rain or weather of that area. However, if plants are yellowish and appear to have stunted growth then that might be nitrogenous deficient symptoms. You have to apply nitrogenous fertilizers.
Discussion and Conclusion
The corn was planted December 10, 2011. There are no sign of disease or pests affecting the plants up to now. Beans will be planted today and tomorrow. The new plot location seems to be good location. It is along the road where many people pass to or from the village. We hope the performance will be better this year.

Corn and Bean Plots Discussion
Corn were planted in December 10, 2012 and Beans in January 16, 2012. Corn looks good and beans are germinating. The replanting was done in some part of the plot which had germination failed. We told them soon they will have to apply fertilizers to the corn especially when plants reach at knee high.
Pyrethrum
Pyrethrum will be transplanted in February. Mangus Chaula spoke about Pyrethrum demonstration plot. He instructed them to prepare the land for transplanting the seedlings. The transplanting will be done the time there is enough moisture in the soil. The land has to be well tilled. The instruction for transplanting will be provided in the next visit.
Questions
Are the pyrethrum seedlings affected by pests and diseases?
No, there are no pests and diseases affecting pyrethrum crop in Iringa. Pyrethrum plant produces flowers that contain chemicals which kill insects. Probably that is the main reason the plant is not highly affected by pests and diseases like corn plant and bean plant.
What is the use of pyrethrum
Pyrethrum is used to make pesticides that are used in agricultural activities and also in households to kill insects and other pests. It is one of the chemical that is environment friendly that is why it is highly demanded in the world.
Conclusion
We told them when they finish prepare the plot for pyrethrum they should communicate with PCT (Magnus Chaula) for transplanting instructions. PCT will provide seedlings for the demonstration plot. Pastor and other church leaders promised to get back to Magnus as soon as possible.

The corn and bean plots look very good. Corn was planted December 12, 2011 and beans December 8, 2011. Corn plants are about knee high. We told Pastor that soon the will have to apply fertilizers as a second application. There have been rodents’ problems at the time of germination. Moreover, part of the corn plot was eaten by cattle grazed around. However the plants are sprouting back and probably this will not affect the yield.
Conclusion
This is one of the best Parish with good demonstration plots every year. We expect they will do the same by following instructions and manage the plots as instructed. Pastor said that many people in his Parish are adopting the techniques to their own farm. Also evangelists do come to the Parish to learn farming techniques and then go back to their preaching point and teach other parish members.

Corn and Bean Plots Discussion
Corn was planted on January 6, 2011. This is late planting. The headmistress said that they could not plant in December because the students were in Vacation. We do encourage early planting but for the secondary school schedule, it is sometimes difficult to implement this. The spacing is wider than what are required. The plot needs immediate weeding. We instructed them to do it as soon as possible. Bean has not yet been planted. We instructed them to prepare the plot and plant beans. The area has been getting good rainfall so far.
Questions
How should we use the pesticides?
Measure 30mls of Thionex and put it in the containers contain 15Litres of water, and then spray in the field. Please remember to read other instructions in the bottle before starting using the pesticides
Pesticides are poisonous, will they have side effect in human health?
Yes pesticides are poisonous; we use then to kill insects in crops. However, it has been proved that when used in accordance with the way it has instructed and when used at the appropriate amount and time. It has no major side effects in the health of human being. Remember to read instructions
Conclusion
We instructed them that they should change the way they manage the plot. There should be one person who will be a demonstration plot supervisor whose job will be to plan and manage the activities of the training. There should be a permanent group of students taking care the demonstration plots. The way the plots performed last year was not impressive. We expect improvement this year

Questions
Herbicides are sold in shops. We heard that they reduce weeding burden to farmers. Is it good idea to use them?
Herbicides are the chemical that kill weeds in the fields. There two types those which are selective and those which are non-selective. Yes, herbicides reduce weeding burden to farmers. Before you use them you know the instructions on how to use them and which rate to apply. We know most of the farmers are not able to buy so many inputs in their farms that is why we teach manual weeding. However if you enough money you can buy and use them. Just remember to follow instructions.
Conclusion
Members of this Parish are interested in establishing the Saving and Credit Cooperative Society (SACCOS) so that it may help them in financing agricultural activities. We told them that we will contact Institute of Microfinance to see the possibility of establishing that type of cooperative.

Corn was planted on December 13, 2012. The plants look good. We told them weeding should be done soon to allow plants to grow healthily. Spacing has been followed, though not in all parts of the farm. Few areas the spacing is wider than recommended. Beans have not been planted yet. They will be planted soon as this is the time to plants leguminous crops in this area. We instructed than to prepare the land for planting bean by removing weeds.
Questions/Comments from Audience
Are we going to apply fertilizers in bean plot too?
Yes, you should apply fertilizers in the bean plot at the time of the planting. However, in bean fertilizer application will be done once.
Are the fertilizers containing chemicals that might have side effect to the human being when crops are consumed?
Fertilizers are scientifically synthesized in the industries. Yes they are chemical however this chemical degraded in the soil to release nutrients to the plants. As far as it is known these nutrients do not have side effects to the human beings when plants are consumed.
When should we plant beans
This is the time. As soon as you prepare your plot please plant the beans
Sometimes we experience insect eating the roots or shoots of the bean plants and cause the plant to dry. What should we do?
To control those insects, please spay pesticides (Thionex) 3 – 5 days after germination of the plants. Spraying at this time will kill the flies that lay eggs which then develop into bean maggot and kill the plant
Conclusion
The demonstration plots here have a supervision of the person appointed to do this work who is known as Project co-coordinator Ms. Hilda Mella. We assumed the plot in this School will have success comparing with plots in other schools because of this system of supervision. We told them that whenever they have problem with the plot, they should contact us for advice and instructions.
