Introduction
We met a big audience of seventeen attendees busy weeding their corn plot located near the church. The corn was growing well but showed some nutritional deficiency already and required application of an insecticide without further delay. Therefore, we advised them to apply the insecticide and do second application of fertilizer immediately.
Purpose of the visit
• To observe the progress of the plot, deliver thionex insecticide and solve any arising problems concerning improved farming practices.
Topics
1. Review of the handouts,
4th visit instructions
• Discussion about germination, Replanting and Pest control
• Weeding after planting
• Monthly weeding after tasseling
2. Demonstration on second fertilizer application on corn
There was demonstration on planting and fertilization of beans on rows 30cm apart and 10cm between plants. Also there was a demonstration on how do second applications of fertilizer in corn
3. Insecticide Application.
We instructed them on how to apply the insecticide on both corn and beans and the recommended rates to apply
4. Delivery.
Most of the items were delivered before except the thionex insecticide which was delivered on the day of the visit.
Corn and Bean Plots Discussion
Corn was planted in December 2012. The plants looked good and well-spaced. Beans will be planted later in the month.
Questions/Comments from Audience
The attendees took time to observe a few plants which were affected by corn stalk borers and distinguish them from those which were diseased by maize streak virus. They were taught how to handle each case differently.
Conclusion
If rain continues to rain well we hope they will have good yields because the parishioners are following the teaching relatively well this year.

Questions/Comments from Audience
The attendees asked a few questions on fertilizers. The first question was about the 2nd application of NPK cereal on corn, the reason for not doing 2nd application on beans. The parishioners also wanted to know why we do not recommend any fertilizer on pyrethrum plants.
Conclusion
The parishioners are interested in learning more about good farming methods and are hard workers. You can see that in the attendance and the way they ask questions. We hope they can perform well if we succeed to provide them the appropriate corn seed.

Introduction
The demonstration meeting was conducted in the church. Phil delivered greetings Christiania Lutheran, Lakeville and US advaisory comettee. Happy (an intern from Tumaini University) gave a presentation about entreprenaureship.
Review of the handout
We went through the extension network handout about seeds and fertilizers
Training
The training was divided into two parts: Fertilizers and seeds. The discussions were conducted in the church. Farmers had many questions and the discussion was very good.
Comments/questions
• What is difference between Urea and CAN?
CAN and Urea are both nitrogenous fertilizers, they add N to the soil. The difference between CAN and Urea is nitrogen content. Urea has high nitrogen content than CAN, however CAN has Calcium that is missing n Urea. All of this are fertilizers for the second application.
• Some people mix CAN and Urea. Is that good practice?
CAN and Urea are both nitrogenous fertilizers, they add N to the soil. Mixing is not bad practices however, since both are nitrogenous fertilizers, we recommend the use of one of this. Consider the price of the fertilizers when purchasing them.
• We beliave that soil s destroyed by fertilizers, is that true?
Fertilizers are not dangerous nor are they harmful to the soil. Fertilizers such as urea, CAN, DAP, potash, or all the various blended/mixed fertilizers are beneficial to the soil and especially to the plants/crops that grow in these soils. So, fertilizer is not bad for you, the soil, and the crops. However, we want to apply these fertilizers in a cost-effective manner such that we are not applying too much of one nutrient and not enough of another nutrient.
• Crop residues cause attract rats in the farm?
Sometimes crop residues can act as habitat for rodents and insects. There are pesticieds that can be used to control this. The benefits of leaving crop residues are far greater than the assumed benefits of burning them.
• In my farm I put fertilizers as normal but I still get short plants and poor yields. What is wrong?
The problem may be a type of seeds you use. You said you got the seeds from another region, the seeds might not be suitable to this place. Try to change the seeds this year and observe the performance.
• I bought the hybrid seeds from the shop. I planted them for years now. The yields have been declining. What is wrong?
For the hybrid varieties, it is advised not to repeat the seeds. These are type of varieties that their high yield or disease resistant characters disappear as you repeat planting them. You are advised o use hybrid seeds only only once
Demonstration
This village is one of the village that they will have demonstration plot sponsored by YARA fertilizers’ company. Th company has offered the fertilizers and the institute is offering corn and bean seeds. We demonstrated on how to plant and apply fertilizers. They participated in the demonstration as few of them were left to try and show others.
Seeds and fertilizers
The following were delivered
Corn Seeds Fertilizers
Variety Amount (kg) Type Amount (bags)
H625 8 NPK 4
Conclusion
We asked them them what they want to learn/dicuss in the next extension meeting. Most f them suggested plant pest and diseases and livestock keeping. We told them we will be back in January/February for another demonstation and extension meeting. Bean seeds will be delivered at the same time.

Discussion
In our 5th and 6th visits, we noticed that there were parts of the demonstration plots were plants were very weak and yield were very poor. After the discussion with the farmers we suspected that the areas had low content of organic matter. We instructed them to apply cow manure in that areas. Today we gave pastor money for purchasing the cow manure and for transporting that manure to the demonstration plot.
Conclusion
This will be he third year of the program here. We told Pastor that we expect better outcome this year. We hope that they have nough experience to manage the plots. Pastor said that people are slowly adopting the techniques.

Review of the handout
• We went through the extension network handout about seeds and fertilizers
Training
The training was on Fertilizers and seeds. The discussions were conducted in the church. Farmers had many questions and the discussion was very good.
Comments/questions
• Can I use the same NPK fertilizer for corn and beans?
Yes, the same type of NPK can be used in both corn and beans. However for the best results, the company that distribute NPK fertilizer recommends NPK Cereal for corn and NPK winner for beans and vegetables.
• Hybrid seeds; are they all packed in plastic bags?
For the seeds to be packed in plastic bag do not necessarily mean that they are hybrid. Packaging material does not identify type of seeds. Ask the shopkeeper before purchasing the seeds to be sure what type you are purchasing.
• How should we apply minjigu fertilizers?
Minjingu fertilizers are applied before or at the time of planting. However since minjingu are simply rock phosphate fertilizers, you better use NPK or DAP which have other nutrients such as Nitrogen.
• How to start a SACCOS to help in agricultural finacing
We do not deal with microfinance however there is an institute of microfinance at Tumaini University. We will tell them to come and hold an introductory meeting to explain the requirements and the procedures.
Pyrethrum
After the discussion we went to visit the pyrethrum plot. The plants did not do well last season. The parish has been instructed to go and get the seedling from the village pyrethrum nursery that is under PCT. The transplanting will be done as earlier as possible (December/January)

Discussion
Last year crop was not impressive, we discussed with the farmers that we are going to try new corn variety this year. Corn variety provided H625 does well in area with medium attitude while. The bean variety, Uyole Njano is also new variety here. It has done well in areas with similar characteristics. This year performance will give a good picture of the suitability of the variety here
Question:
• What is the best type of seed?
The best seed can not be identified by looking. The best seed variety is determined by yield capacity, deaseases resistant and suitability of the variety to a given area. We are going to use the demonstration plot to determin the best corn and bean seeds of this area.
Conclusion
The planting ad fertilizer application were demonstrated before the farmers. They promised to take care of the plots, to learn from it and hence to adopt the techniques. They thank their friends of Fish Lake Lutheran for supporting the program.

Comments/questions:
• Why should we use close spacing in planting corn and beans?
Close spacing and fertilizer application are advised to increase yield in a small piece of land. Close spacing give high plant population and hence lead into high yields. However, it has to go with appropriate fertilization
• When shoud we apply fertilizer?
We recommend you to apply fetilizers two times; at planting and the second application should be when corn plants are at knee high. Apply fertilizers to the beans only once
• What is the best type of corn variety to grow in our areas?
Since your area does not receive high amount of rainfall, I will assume drought torelant varieties will be suitable to this area. This season we will try pioneer 3253 variety that thakes about 120 days to mature.
Conclusion
This is dry areas. The irrigation is needed that is why he plots were located in the irrigated farmland of the village. We told Pastor and other farmers that they should make sure that the demonstration plots get irrigated whenever needed.

Discussion
Last year corn crop did not perform as good as expected, we discussed with the farmers that we are going to try new corn variety this year. Corn variety provided this season is TMV. This variety does well in area with high attitude like here.
Questions/comments:
• Farmers said that the main problem fo their village is marketing of the their crops. They said that since hey are located far from Mafinga/Iringa, they have to sell their crops to the middle man with very low prices. They can not transport their crops to Mafing ecuase of the high transportation crops
We told them that marketing is a common problem in many distant located places. We can not promise to help them in finding the better market of their produceor facilitate transport to town but we advised them to try group marketing. When they are in groups they can even reduce transport cost. All in all something has to be done here to facilitate marketing of farmers’ produce
• They said that they expectation that SACCOS will help them to improve their lives
We told them that we, the institute of Agriculture and Institute o Microfinace of Tumaini University will continue to work to gether to make sure that the agriculture training going together with microfinance supporting activities
• Fertilizers are very expensive here. We request you to help us in getting agro dealers who will be willing to ship fertilizers up to here.
Its true due to the distance your village is located, the transportation costs must be high hence fertilizer prices will also be high. You may try group purchase and see if that will help to reduce prices. We will talk with YARA company (fertilizer distributing company) to see if they will be to transport fertilizers up to here.
Conclusion
We had a good meeting here. Farmers were very active during the meeting and later very cooperative during the demonstration session. All the demonstrations were done by farmers them selves showing other farmers.

Most of the items were delivered before except the thionex insecticide which was delivered on the day of the visit.
Corn and bean Plots discussion
Corn was planted on December 19 and 20, 2012. A few plants were destroyed by insect pests, but generally the plants looked good and well-spaced. The plot was well weeded. The parishioners believe the hybrid corn seed H614 can do better in their area. Beans will be planted in later in the month. We left an insecticide called thionex for them to apply against the insect pests which were destroying corn plants.
Questions/Comments from Audience
The attendees asked a few questions on bean diseases and answers were provided.
The Pastor wants the good farming methods to reach the other preaching points and he has given part of the bean harvested from the plot to the preaching points as seed. Msonde took some time to elaborate about fertilizers and attendees were happy to learn more on fertilizers
Conclusion
This parish has an opportunity to do well especially on corn which was already growing well. There is a good progress since they moved the plot up to Kidilo. Sponsoring congregation may consider the thought of extending the demo plot to the preaching points proposed by the pastor who seems interested and works hard.

Introduction
Idunda is a distantly located site on the mountainous part of Iringa region in Kilolo district and the road to the village is the difficulty one. The planting season for corn and beans is very different from many villages. The parishioners in this village planted corn in September 06, 2012 and at the time of the visit corn had matured. We had a good taste of the fresh corn from the plot.
Purpose of the visit
• To observe the progress of the plot and solve any arising problems.
Topics
Since the village is visited a few times in a year, we covered as many topics as we could include land preparation, planting, spacing, fertilization, weeding and pest control on corn and beans. Special emphases were given to the following:
1. Review of the handouts,
4th visit instructions
• Discussion about germination, Replanting and Pest control
• Weeding after planting
• Monthly weeding after tasseling
2. Demonstration on second fertilizer application on corn
There was demonstration on planting and fertilization of beans on rows 30cm apart and 10cm between plants. Also there was a demonstration on how do second applications of fertilizer in corn
3. Insecticide Application.
We instructed them on how to apply the insecticide on both corn and beans and the recommended rates to apply.
4. Delivery.
There was no any delivery on the day of the visit because all deliveries were done earlier before the planting season.
Corn and Bean Plots Discussion
As mentioned earlier in the introduction, Corn was planted on Sept 6, 2012. The crop looked good although it was widely spaced. The parishioners said a serious drought hit the area after planting. They did not harvest any beans.
Questions/Comments from Audience
The parishioners posed a problem of having no proper corn seed suitable to their area. They suggested trying Pioneer seed. Probably this is one of the sites to try the Pioneer seed specified to high rainfall areas. They remarked for the modern agriculture radio program which they said they listen every Friday and Monday and they like it.
Conclusion
The parishioners seemed interested with modern farming techniques but more teaching is required and the proper seed has to be sought.

Introduction
We drove past the dry valley of Nyanzwa to meet a big audience of 13 people both females and males waiting at the church. The audience included a village agricultural officer and a school teacher. The pastor told us that the village was already suffering of hunger. Some families were surviving on porridge made out of a little corn flour and a sweetening agent. Corn grain is scarce and a tin is sold at 15,000/=tshs. Cattle do not do well except goats. The pastor thought the year is much more difficult than the past year.
Purpose of the visit
• Delivering seeds and fertilizers
• Demonstrating planting and fertilizer application
Topics covered
1. Review of the handouts
- 3rd Visit Instruction
- Plant population and Fertilizer applications

Variety Pioneer Uyole Njano NPK cereal Thionex NPK winner

Comments/Questions
The first comment was about mixed cropping. A member of the gathering wanted to know why we deny mixed cropping; we explained for the reason of optimization but then thought of being flexible under their situation to cover the big risk of zero yields in Nyanzwa.
They suggested buying a water pump for the demonstration plot and using it to water at least one acre seriously to rescue the situation
Conclusion:
It seems the drought situation is discouraging people to the level that they have become desperate, they no longer have any hope of any growing crops.

Introduction
It was hot as we drove down to Mlowa. Crops looked better this time as compared to the other times we visit the site. We met a small audience of only three people; the pastor and two church leaders. All the people were gone to the fields which are located far away from the village. The pastor told us that members come home on Saturday to be able to attend church services and leave to the fields again on Sunday evening.
Purpose of the visit
• To observe the progress of the plot, deliver thionex insecticide and solve any arising problems concerning improved farming practices.
Topics
1. Review of the handouts,

Corn and Bean Plots Discussion
Corn was planted in two splits at the end of January 2012. The plants looked good and well-spaced. Beans will be planted in March. Rice was not planted at all. The pastor said they didn’t get land to plant rice but was optimistic that they will be able to grow rice in the next season since they have enough time to be securing land.
Questions/Comments from Audience
There were no questions or comments from the attendees.
Conclusion
This parish has a very narrow chance of performing any better in the production of corn, beans and rice because of the drought which hits the area frequently and lack of adequate irrigated land.
