• Delivery
Type/Variety Amount
Bean seeds Wanja 40kg
Fertilizers NPK 2 bags
CAN 2 bags
Pesticides Thionex 1 Liter

Demonstration

Corn;
The have severe drought which existed before planting the corn plot and has continued after planting. As a consequence of the severe drought the corn plot had poor germination and those which germinated are not looking good because of lack of soil moisture. They did replant seeds where the corn didn’t germinate and ended up with poor germination there also.

Beans;
Beans will be planted as soon as they get rain from the beginning of February.

Questions

1. Why do we use two bottle caps of CAN and one for UREA during 2nd fertilizer application?
UREA has a higher nitrogen content than CAN, UREA 46% N and CAN 26% N.

2. At what time should pesticide be applied on the corn plot?
Pesticide should be applied once you observe the signs of insect damage on the plot.

Comments
More than ten people said they have started using the practices on their own farms. They generally said that using our techniques they harvest more crops than what they used to harvest previously.

Conclusion
We need rainfall in order to get the expected results of not less than twenty bags of corn. The area is facing severe drought condition at the moment and people are praying to get rainfall.

Demonstrations

Corn plot
Corn plants are knee high and they are ready for 2nd fertilizer application. Corn looks good and they were planted using the recommended spacing and they had good germination. We demonstrated how to apply CAN fertilizer and pesticide on the corn plot.

Bean plot
Beans will be planted anytime from the end of January once they get rain. Instructions on how to plant beans were given.

Questions from the audience

1. Are there any problems with soaking seeds which are to be used for replanting?
If you are sure that during planting there will be enough moisture in the soil as is the case with irrigation then there might not be any problem with germination. On the other hand if there won’t be enough moisture in the soil at the planting time then there will be a problem with the soaked seeds adapting to the new environment (Dry soil) and can result to poor germination or wastage of seeds.

2. It looks like placing fertilizer 5cm from the plant is very close.
Five 5cm from the plant is a reasonable distance where by fertilizer can not be in direct contact with the roots but still the roots can be able to utilize fertilizer from that distance.

3. How long does the pesticide stay within the plant before you can apply the second time?
In order to apply pesticide for the second time you are supposed to have regular visits at the plot/field and if you see any signs of insect/pest damage then you can go for the second pesticide application.

Conclusion
Pastor Yona Kinganga requested us if we can make a visit to see some of the fields which farmers planted using the recommended practices we are teaching them.

4. Plots
Location of the plot had to change. The first location was a rented piece of land. The owner decided to take it back at the beginning of the rain season. Plot is now at the preaching point about 5km from the parish.
Corn
Spacing instruction has been followed and the plants look good. In some portions of the plot, nitrogen deficiency is observed. This is probably due to the sandy soil and hence leaching is taking place very fast.
Bean
The plot is clean and is expected to be planted next week

Comments/questions
 How many times should they apply fertilizers in beans?
We told them to do just single application at the time of planting. Beans have capacity to fix nitrogen therefore the second application is not necessary.
 They were wondering if they should use NPK only for the first application or they can use other fertilizers
We told them, we recommend NPK because it is suitable to their area regarding the nutrients it contains, however other fertilizers ie. DAP are suitable too.
 What is the best way to deal with pests and diseases in the farm?
The best way is to do crop rotation, this will cut off the disease or pest cycle from one generation to another.

Conclusion

It is their first year here. We encouraged them to take good care of the demonstration plots. From these plots, they will be able to learn modern farming activities and hence increase the yields in their farms.

Demonstrations

Corn plot
They planted corn in December and had a very good germination. They are about knee high very close to being ready for the 2nd fertilizer application. We gave the instructions on how to apply CAN fertilizer and pesticides in case they observe signs of pest damage in the plot.

Bean plot
We delivered bean seeds and demonstrated how to plant them. They are aiming to plant beans at the end of January.

Questions

1. How far should the fertilizer be placed from the bean seeds?
We recommend the fertilizer to be placed five centimeters from the bean seeds.

2. Why not NPK fertilizer used for 2nd application and how is NPK compared with CAN?
Both Urea and CAN are nitrogenous fertilizers they differ in terms of percentage of Nitrogen they contain, CAN 27%N and UREA 46%N. NPK can be used for planting and for second application depending on the ratios of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium on the bag. NPK with 10-18-24 is used for planting and 20-10-10 can be used for planting and 2nd application.

3. Is there any effect from the use of manures?
Manure has an added advantage compared to commercial fertilizers in that it not only adds nutrients to the soil but also they add soil organic matter which helps to improve soil water retention and builds soil structure.

Comments on the use of our techniques
Eleven of the participants said they have started using the practices we are teaching them on their own farms. Evangelist said that at the preaching point shamba they planted two acres in the past and ended up harvesting 9 bags utilizing conventional techniques. Last year they planted ¾ acre utilizing Ag. Institute recommended techniques and harvested 10bags. A woman said that using minimum tillage is less expensive and there is no need to hire oxen to plow.

Conclusion
Pastor Meshack Magova emphasized the important of using the techniques on their own farms especially to those who have not yet started using the practices we are recommending.

Sorghum will be planted in another quarter acre and they have seeds already waiting for rainfall to plant. Beans will be planted in half an acre as we were not able to get the cowpea seeds this year. We demonstrated bean planting and 2nd fertilizer application on corn plot.

Questions from the audience

1. How to apply pesticide without using a sprayer if you don’t have it?
Is good to apply pesticide using a sprayer because in that way you are sure that you are applying the right doze rather than using traditional ways.

2. How should we handle the remaining fertilizer when planting beans?
First of all we don’t expect to have fertilizer remains if we plant at right plot size and recommended spacing but incase if there are fewer remains you can just broadcast in the plot.

Conclusion

They have severe drought this season which made them not able to plant sorghum until now. We told them that once it rains they should plant sorghum and beans. People are very supportive of the program and so far they have shown great interest.

Bean plot
Beans will be planted anytime from the end of January once they get rain. We gave them instructions on how to plant beans were given.

Questions from the audience
1. Why do we plant beans in late January?

Beans should be planted in late January in order to utilize rain water in February and March especially for low land areas where there is little rain and it rains for short time. For those planting in high altitude areas where there is enough rainfall beans can even be planted in March.

2. If there are no pests in the field is there any need to apply pesticide?
If there are no pests in the field there is no need to apply pesticide. We recommend that you regularly visit the plot so that if are there any signs of pests then you can apply pesticide.

Comments;
A good number of people have started using our techniques on their own farms and Pastor Nickson told us that if we can get time we can visit his farm which is five acres in size he planted using our recommended practices. Two other people also told us that they have five acres each and they planted the same way we have told them to plant.

Demonstrations

Corn plot
The corn Plot was planted, they had a very good germination and the plot has very good looking corn. They had a little problem with following the recommended spacing between rows and with plants. We demonstrated the methods they have to use for 2nd application of CAN fertilizer.

Bean plot
Beans will be planted in the beginning of February and we did demonstration of NPK fertilizer application and bean planting. Because they had problem of spacing when planting corn we told them to follow the recommended spacing when planting beans.

Questions from the audience

1. They asked if we can show them practically how to plant beans.
We conducted the meeting in the church and explained the activities of the day. Then we conduct demonstration of either planting or fertilizer application or both.

2. Why do we do 1st application of fertilizer in beans and not both 1st and 2nd application?
CAN and UREA are the nitrogenous fertilizers which are used for 2nd application. With beans after they reach a certain growth stage they start converting the atmospheric nitrogen using the symbiotic relationship with root nodule bacteria to provide nitrogen needed for plant growth.

3. What are the effects of intercropping, using stored seeds from the previous year and the use of inorganic fertilizers?
Intercropping enhances competition for nutrients, moisture and sunshine between different plant species as they have different root system and leaf canopy.

Using seeds stored from the previous for local varieties encourages seed born diseases. Using stored hybrids seed from last year results in reduced vigor.

For inorganic fertilizer use the right kind of fertilizers as recommended from soil analysis results and recommended rate.

Conclusion

We told them to plant beans using the recommended spacing and also encouraged them to learn and take back the practices and use on their own farms.

Demonstrations

Corn plot
Corn Plants were planted and they had problems with rainfall after they planted which resulted into some seeds failing to germinate. They did replant in the holes where seeds didn’t germinate and still they faced the same problem of some not germinating. We demonstrated the 2nd fertilizer application.

Bean plot
Beans will be planted in March and we demonstrated how to plant them in terms of spacing between plants and lines and how to put NPK fertilizer during planting.

Questions

1. Corn seeds when planted using fertilizers doesn’t germinate, what is the cause of that?
If corn seeds are planted as we recommend that fertilizer should be 5cm from seed there is no possibility of fertilizer killing the seed even if there is not enough moisture in the soil. But if you place both seed and fertilizer in the same spot and there is inadequate moisture in the soil there is the possibility of seeds not germinating as fertilizer will drain water from seed through Osmosis.

2. What is preferred to add in the soil between manure and commercial fertilizers?
Incase if you are able to find enough manure to apply then we highly encourage you to use manure because manure in addition of adding nutrients in the soil also improves soil organic matter, soil structure and also control soil erosion.

Comments;
Pastor made a comment on the possibility of moving the plot to another location next season because they think the problem with corn germination is due to the kind of soil. The soil in this plot does not hold water not because of lack of organic matter, and also because it was previously a forest.

Conclusions:
We encouraged them to attend our meetings in large numbers and to inform all villagers’ when we visit so that they can attend the trainings and benefit from what we teach them.

Plots
Corn Plants were planted and they had a very good germination and the plot is a good example of the proper use of the recommended spacing between rows and within plants. The bean plot will be planted this January.

Questions

1. How to make a 10cm spacing between bean seeds using a hand hoe?
To make 10cm spacing between bean seeds can be done using a mark of any kind so long as you can be able to see and use them. Alternatively, twin string can be used to mark 10cm spacing by tying knot at the recommended spacing.

2. There are two ways of pesticide application according to our experience; using pesticide mixed with sandy or mixed with water, so which way is the best?
Most of the pesticides come with instructions on the proper use of a particular pesticide, so if the instruction on the bottle requires that pesticide to be mixed with a certain amount of water or sandy then we should do as instructed.

Comments;
When they were asked how many of them have started using the techniques we are teaching them, of the 12 attendees three people said they have started using our practices and here are some of the observations they told us:
• One woman said she used the recommended practices and got comments from her neighbors about how nice her corn and beans looked. They wanted to know what she was doing to get crops that looked so good. She also said that she got the highest yields of corn and beans that she has ever harvested.
• One man said he is using our recommended practices. Soil fertility is improved by leaving the crop residues to decompose and release nutrients back to the soil and hence yields are increasing
• The pastor also said using the recommended spacing of planting corn and beans eliminates the need of growing a large area and ending up with low harvest and instead they can farm a small area and harvest more.

Conclusion
After going through the handouts and demonstrations of bean planting and 2nd
Fertilizer application on the corn plot we reminded them on the importance of learning our practices and taking them back and start using on their own farms.

Pesticides Thionex ½ Litre

4. Plots
Corn
The plot is about 200m down the hill. We could not get to the plot this time because it started raining. They said the corn is about 1 foot tall and they are doing great. We gave them the pesticides to control pests eating leaves.
Bean
Will be planted in February

Comments
 They asked us how can they improve yield in their families as their parents get low yield in spite of working so hard in the farms
Yield in the farms can be improved by
1. Using improved seeds and planting at the right time in appropriate spacing
2. Using fertilizers (industrial or non-industrial fertilizers) according to the recommendations
3. Proper control of diseases and pests (that include weeding)
 How many times should someone apply pesticides?
We recommend that pesticides should be apply as soon as pests or damages in the field are detected
 How many times should they apply fertilizers in bean farms?
In the bean farms we recommend a single fertilizer application. Beans are leguminous plants hence they are able to fix nitrogen from the atmosphere. A single application is enough for the plant to grow and yield beans.
 In some of the places they have seen their parents mixing the two types of fertilizers (Urea and CAN) for the second fertilizer application. Is this appropriate?
Both Urea and CAN are nitrogenous fertilizers. We do not recommend mixing them because just a single type of this fertilizer can work fine and help plants to grow and yield high.

Conclusion

We delivered seeds and fertilizers and encouraged them to do a better job and learn from the demonstration plots. The Ag teacher promised to supervise them and make sure the techniques are properly followed.

Pesticides Thionex ½ Litre
Sprayer pump Knapsack Capacity: 5 litres

Corn;
They have already made the second application of fertilizer to the plot. The corn on the plot looks good and if they can get more rain they will have good yield.

Beans;
Beans are planted and they are starting to come up.

Questions

1. Is it possible to practice minimum tillage on new land?
It will depend on the situation of the farm but in case of a forest the land can be cleared and plowed. Remove the roots and the following years go on with minimum tillage.

2. Some people are mixing fertilizer such as CAN and UREA is it recommended?
CAN and UREA both add Nitrogen to the soil and it is OK to use either of them according to soil analysis results, but use the right amount required per unit area.

3. Does the use of commercial fertilizer destroy the soil?
Inorganic /commercial fertilizer does not destroy soil if you use the right kind of fertilizer and apply the recommended amount per unit area. What destroys the soil is using the wrong fertilizer or applying more than the optimal amount.

4. How does fertilizer work on plants?
For fertilizer to be used by plants it must first be in solution form which can easily be absorbed by plant roots. I cannot describe the Chemistry behind the absorbance of nutrients into the plant.

5. Soil sampling was done only in one village, will the results be used even by neighbor villages
The recommendation can also be used even in the surrounding area as we took samples at 6 inch deep and from 6-12 inch deep. The characteristics of the soil in the depth of 6 to 12 inch can be the same for a wide area.

Conclusion
Pastor Jezbeli Ndendya reminded the congregation on the importance of active participation on our training.

4. Plots
Corn
Corn plot does not look good. There has been poor plant germination and replanting was delayed. Moreover spacing was not properly followed. Plants are yellow due to this area being very sunny and dry. Since the plot is in the irrigated land we told them to start irrigating it as soon as possible. We also told them to make the second application of fertilizer since most plants are at knee high.
Bean
We have just delivered bean seeds; they are planning to plant soon
Rice
The rice plot has been plowed. The seedlings are tall enough to start transplanting (They are about 6inches). They are planning to do transplanting next week. They said this season they have changed the seed variety from “India rangi” of last season to “Super Zambia”. The reason is the former did not have good market though yields were high.

Conclusion

We told Pastor to encourage people to attend in the demonstration meeting. Moreover since the corn plot does not look well; we told them that it won’t attract many people to adopt the techniques. We also insisted that there should be good management of the plots so that people are attracted to adopt the techniques. We asked them to do a better job in the bean plot. Recommendations should be followed.

3. Delivery
Type/Variety Amount
Bean seeds Wanja 30kg
Fertilizers NPK 2 bags
CAN 2 bags
Pesticides Thionex ½ litres

4. Plots
Corn
The corn plot looks very good. Spacing has properly followed and the weeding has been done frequently. Since this is an irrigated plot, they will soon allow water to flow to the plot.
Bean
The plot for bean has been prepared and soon will be planted. We have changed the bean variety here. Last year we gave them the variety called Uyole 96 and it did not perform well. This year we are introducing another variety called Wanja, which we expect will do better.

Discussion
There are 15 attendees, and 4 said they have adopted the techniques.
Pastor said he has been using the techniques and has seen increase in yield from what he used to get
Another member said he has started to use the techniques, he does not do intercropping and he uses fertilizers. From what he has seen now (green and strong plants) he expect to harvest more than he used to before
During our discussion, the issue of irrigation was raised. As the village population increases, the scramble for irrigated land increases. It looks like there will not be enough irrigated land for everyone. We advised them to start thinking of having efficient irrigation schemes where by water is not lost along the way in the sand soil. Paved tunnels and paved ditches would help. However introduction of more drought resistant crops will also help. This village has a problem with elephants coming to eat crops during the night. Seems like we do not have clear solution for that!!

Comments/questions
 The Pastor said that they had the problem with the livestock keepers feeding their cattle on other people’s crop residues. They now do the grazing at night therefore it is very difficult to prevent them from doing it
We advice them to go to the livestock keepers and get the cow manure as the compensation of their crop residues and they should apply it to their farm to increase the organic matter in their farms

Conclusion

This year the Pastor and the Parish members are more determined. They work hard trying to adopt what is taught and the Pastor does a good job of keeping records. We told them to keep up the good work.

Before the meeting we visited the Parish demonstration plot. The demonstration was conducted in the Parish church which is very close to the School. Both students and Parish members attended in the same place (in the church).

Purpose of the visit
• Bean planting demonstration
• Fertilizer applications demonstration
• Fertilizers delivery

Topics

Type/Variety Amount
Fertilizer CAN 2 bags
Pesticides Thionex 1 liters
Sprayer pump Knapsack Capacity 16 liters

4. Plots
Corn
Corn is about 2 feet tall. Spacing has been followed, records have been kept and pesticides to control insects were once sprayed. Pastor said Parish members were surprised with how good the plants look.
Bean
The bean plot is adjacent with the corn plot. We instructed them to begin the preparation for the bean plot. Beans are planted late in the season in this area.

Comments /Questions

 While doing replanting if you are run out of the seeds of the variety you planted before, can you use different variety
We do recommend that one seed variety should be used in the same farm. This brings plant uniformity. However, if that is the only option you have then fill the gaps with whatever variety you have.
 Is it recommended to do transplanting in corn?
Although in some situation it can work (transplanting followed by enough rain), it is not recommended because corn plants become weak when transplanted and any unfavorable condition may kill them.
 Is it recommended to use two types of fertilizers for the second application in the same season ie. CAN and Urea?
Both CAN and Urea supply Nitrogen to the plants. We recommend the usage of one type only in the farm in one season.

Conclusion

Their plot looks good and seems they are working hard to take care of the plot. We encouraged them to keep on doing that and to adopt the techniques on their own farms.

Before we conducted a meeting here, we went to another Parish called Kiponzelo to deliver bean seeds and fertilizers. When we arrived in Ihemi, we found parish members already in the church ready for the demonstration.

Purpose of the visit
• Bean planting demonstration
• Fertilizer applications demonstration
• Bean seeds and fertilizers delivery

Topics
1. Going through handout with attendees
 4th Visit handout
2. Demonstrations
We demonstrated how to plant beans in the appropriate spacing and how to make fertilizer application to the beans. We also demonstrated how to make the second application of fertilizer to the corn.
3. Delivery
Type/Variety Amount
Bean seeds Uyole 98 27kg
Fertilizers NPK 2 bags
CAN 2 bags
Pesticides Thionex ½ Litre

4. Plots
Corn
The plants look very good, the spacing has been followed properly and the weeding has been done. One spot of the plot has yellowish corn; we told them that that might be the nitrogen deficiency symptom because of either soil erosion or removal of the top soil by human activities i.e. making bricks. However the second fertilizer application will add the nitrogen in that area too.
Bean
Bean plot will be planted next week

5. Discussion
Attendees who are using/ adopting the techniques this season are 4 out of the 9 attending today. When asked what was there experience so far compare with the way they use to farm before they said,
The minimum tillage has enabled them to save money from hiring a tractor or oxen to plough their farms
Minimum tillage has increase the water retention in their farms as their plants are not drying faster as they used to be when the rain stops
Some of them have been farming in the slopes and they have seen reduction of soil erosion as they practice the close spacing and minimum tillage
They have also experience the increase of yields in their farm

Comments/Questions
 They asked us what type of pesticides is good in controlling the leaf eating insects
We told them that the good pesticides depend on the type of the pests in the field. We recommend thionex because we have been using it in other plots and it has shown good results. However using pesticides for long time can lead those pests to forming immunity and hence they become resistant. We encourage crop rotation as another way to deal with pests and diseases.
 One member said that he has been using leaves of certain type of trees to control pests in his farm by grinding them and mix with water
We told him that we are interested to know that type of tree so he can teach others about that method. We encourage the use of locally available materials in controlling pests and disease.
 They asked if we can start a demonstration plot for cash crops
We told them that currently we are dealing with the food crops to improve food output and fight against hunger. Later on we might deal with cash crops as well.

Conclusion

We left Ihemi and drove back to Iringa. We did not meet the Pastor as he was in Iringa Town for other responsibilities. The meeting was organized and supervised by the Parish Secretary. We told them that we will be back in May for the yield data collection instructions.
