After an introduction, the meeting started with the quick review of the handouts:
· DIRA – Institute of agriculture agreement
· CVP plot management FAQs
· CVP Plot record of events
Demonstrations:
· It was demonstrated how to measure an acre using actual length measurements (63.5m by 63.5m) instead of using pacing (70 by 70)
· The Rain gauge and a recording sheet were given to congregation. It was instructed on how to read and record.
The plot was measured. They have good and enough plot for both corn and beans in the same place behind the church. There were many questions today. They were wondering were to plant corn because the plot they have is surrounded by trees which are about to be harvested. Once they are harvested there will be no windbreak. We told them to plant in the same plot because the plot had been used for beans last season hence it is good crop rotation practice. We have to develop another kind of wind break here. There were concerns about type of the corn seed to be used. They said they have been using H 628 (same like we planted Kilolo in 2008/09) and the corn they get is lighter (weighing less) than what weigh the local variety. We told them this time we are going to try another variety H 614 or H6303). The crowd was so excited about the project. However the pastor told us that he is moving to another congregation (Ipalamwa). Next visit we are going to meet a different Pastor.

This was the second visit here. First time we came, there was no body in the church. The pastor did not get the information about our visit (Pastor lost his cell-phone). We had to reschedule the meeting with Pastor’s wife. Don gave greetings from US adversary committee and the SPAS.

The plot was measured. They have 0.5 acre plot in the slope in front of the church. The other 0.5 acre will be in another side. We discussed about controlling soil erosion using terraces and vegetation. There were concern about minimum tillage, the pastor said that he thinks the plants’ attachment to the ground will be very week and hence they will be falling down with the wind blow. We told them, plants root will go deep as normal and if wind is a problem in that area, wind break plants must be grown. We told them that another reason of having a demonstration plot is to research and come up with the solutions of the problems the local farmers of a particular area face. There has been good farming discussion here. While we were measuring the plot the government agricultural extension officer came. We told him what we were doing and he was invited to the next visit.
On our way back to Iringa town, we gave a ride to an evangelist of that area. Don bought him a new bicycle in Iringa town for evangelical activities in his place.

· The Rain gauge and a recording sheet were given to congregation. Instruction on how to use was given too. They were wondering where to place the rain gauge because farms are out of the village and sometimes one part of the village receives rain, the other do not and vice verse. They were told that an average of the rain the village receives will not make big difference from one part to another.
The plot is in a river valley located about 2 km from the church in the farming area. There are some irrigated plots (Irrigation uses hoe-made ditches and is done by hand). The parish bought the plot last March. The pastor cultivated beans last season. They have 3835m2 but that is all they have. As we were measuring the plot, the group grew. Farmers who were in that area joined us. A neighbor (who sold part of his plot to the parish) sought an advice on how to improve his yield. He was told not to burn the crop residues. Moreover he should use the fertilizers recommendations from the soil analysis of that area. However Ibrahim taught him how to determine soil fertility by observing the plant appearance and type of vegetation on the area. Hi was invited to the meeting in the next visit.

· We made 1m stick and give them to use for measuring their fields
· The Rain gauge and a recording sheet were given to Pastor and instructed them how to use it. They had many question about the rain gauge.
With them we measured a 0.5 acre adjacent their church. This will be used for corn. The other 0.5 acre which will be used for edible beans is far from the church. We instructed to follow the same procedures to get the correct dimensions.

This parish had larger turn out of women (10 out of 18 attendees). The Pastor started talking to the audience. He talked about the value of time, telling them to keep track of time and they will get their work done. We introduced ourselves. Don delivered the greetings from USA. We distributed the handouts to all.

With them we measured a 0.5 acre adjacent their church. They have church farm that is not able to be reached by vehicle, and the second half acre will be there. The plot at the church is the newly cleared. It had big piles of grass and thorn bushes. After some discussion it was decided they will pile the largest portion of brush and grass and burn it in one or two points. However they should not burn everything leave the land uncovered after that. We thanked them for the hard work they did, however we told them we were not happy because most of the work was done by women! The Pastor gave us a bag of corn to deriver to the Kidabaga’s pastor.

· The Rain gauge and a recording sheet were given to Pastor, we explained the advantages of having rain records, where to place the rain gauge and how and when to read it ( after every 24hours)
They were concerns about the size of the rain gauge that it might get full some day. We explained, unless they are going to have flood (which is unlikely to occur), the rain gauge will not get full. We measured their plot which is just behind the church. It has very irregular shape and hard to measure accurately and it is 0.25 acres. They said they want that part of the plot to be there for all top see when they come for the Sunday services. The remainder of the plot will be at rural farm site.

About 300 students

The meeting started with an introduction followed by the discussion about the performance of the last year plots in the headmaster’s office. Their partner congregation provided them with fertilizers and seed. They had 1.5 acres of corn and they end up getting 8 bags. The school was not timely in taking care of the plots because the school schedule conflicted with the need for work in the field. This year the ag teacher is working to have the group of students taking care of the plot instead of depending on all the students for labor. Question; will they have a 1.5 acre plot like last year? (Support?)
The meeting with the whole gathering of students was conducted in the classroom

Students had many questions; time was not enough to get all of them! They wanted to know if they are not going to burn the crop residues how are they going to control the pests. Why is not advised to use more than once some kind of improved seeds, where the results of the soil analysis from their soil we took and what will be the use of that. After answering their questions, the headmaster stood up asked them to save their next questions for the next visit. Since the school had a demonstration plot last year, there was no need of measuring the new one.

One woman said that she cultivated 6 acres last year and harvested 3 bags. “This year” she said “I will follow the instructions from the Institute!” Since this is somehow an urban congregation, the plot is at the preaching point. It has been scheduled the next visit to meet at the preaching point so as to get time to measure the plot.

Their plot was too far from the church. It was difficult to travel with all people, so we gave directions on how we want them to measure that plot. We told them to do it and we shall check out in the next visit.

There was a funeral going on and most of the people in the village went to attend, thus the attendance was poor. After waiting for a while the meeting started at 11:10am (Scheduled for 10:00am) with four evangelists plus the Pastor and his wife. Ibrahim introduced Don and Karen. The plot which is directly behind the church was visited. We had to move to catch up with the schedule hence we did not measure the plot. We asked them to do it and text the dimensions to Ibrahim. We will check the accuracy of the dimensions in next visit.
