Purpose of the visit
• Explain and demonstrate how to take yield measurement

Topics
Pastor Lunodzo Mang’ulisa introduced the Ag. Institute staff and went on with the greetings from the Iringa diocese.

Review of the handouts
• 5th Visit handout
• Yield recording sheet
• Rain record sheets to know the amount of rain received during this season

Demonstrations
We measured the 10 m row and counted the number of plants (in three different locations within the demonstration plot) for the number of corn ears and yield determination, this was demonstrated by using a meter tape, and the spray paint to mark the demarcations within which number of corn ears and yield information should be obtained.

Plots Information.
With corn plot they have problems with termites eating the corn stalk and ears. They tried to spray different termiticides without success. There is a new termiticide in the market know as dragnet which we plan to test its effectiveness in order to solve the problem. Beans are not yet planted and they plan to plant in July

Comments
They think of moving the plot to the preaching point in order to escape the problem with termites.
We told them the important of having demo plot in the same area for three years which will allow accumulation of organic matter. On the other end if they think it will be necessary to move the plot they should find an area which people are passing by. Also in order to solve the problem with termites we plan to test the new termiticide (Dragnet)

Conclusion

We insisted them to collect the data as we instructed them to do.

Then we told them to record the total yield of corn after shelling them. They also didn’t plant beans and
Sorghum because of drought situation they had this season.

Comments
• They harvested corn before they receive instructions from the institute of agriculture because they had problems with termites. But we told them that next time before they take any action regarding the demo plot they should call us and we will instruct them how to handle the problem as we usually used to tell them.
• From the rain record it showed that they got some rain in February and March which I thought they were supposed to plant beans and sorghum but they didn’t do that when we asked them they said it was not enough to grow.

Conclusion
Pastor Naboth Chaula was not present and he was represented by Cotino Mhanga. We told them to take the yield data from corn.

Plots information
In the corn plot, the spacing was affected by germination failure at the beginning of the season. We told them that this will affect the yield they are going to get.
Beans will be planted next month (July)

Comments
• They are getting enough rain but corn yield doesn’t look good and they suggested shifting the plot to another location; we told them the important of keeping the plot the same place in order to see the benefits of organic matter accumulation. Though, we think we should allow them to shift the plot to other location and see if the yield will improve
• They suggested to plant local varieties of corn instead of improved varieties; we explained to them the benefits and qualities the improved varieties have compared to local varieties and we told them that’s why we insist them to plant improved corn varieties.

Conclusions:
We told them we need the yield data for the benefit of the whole program and for the success of the demonstration plots next season. We expect them to do a better job in collecting the data.

Went through the handouts
• 5th Visit handout
• Yield recording sheet
• Rain record sheets to know the amount of rain received during this season

Demonstrations
We showed them how to measure 10m row and take the yield data. Corns were still green and not yet matured. They also have not yet planted beans as we were expecting them to have planted beans before the rain season end.

Question
They asked if they can be helped to get a new water pump
We told them that we can not promise them anything regarding the new pump because the Institute supplies mostly the farming inputs for the demo plot.

Comments
• They are hiring water pump which is not reliable as sometimes they doesn’t get
• Corn plant they planted for the first time in January dried because of drought and they had to replant in March the one which are still in the field and they are not doing well as well because they are not getting enough water.
• The pump they were using for irrigation had mechanical problems, hence it doesn’t work. We told them to plant the crops when they get the first rain in order to use rainfall to grow crops than depending on irrigation only, also they should fix the pump to solve the current problem with drought.

Conclusion
We encouraged them because of irrigation potential they have they should think of fixing the water pump and go on with irrigating the corn plot and plant the beans as well.

Demonstrations
We demonstrated how to measure the 10m row of beans and rice and collect the required data of plant population and yield. Beans and rice plot were still on the field but had already harvested corn.

Plots information
Corn was planted in half an acre and they didn’t get yield as was expected because they didn’t get enough rain and water for irrigation. Beans were planted on the irrigated land and they looks doing well and they planted in a quarter an acre as well as rice.

Comments
• As we were discussing with them the kind of yield they expect to get this season they should also consider to compare between years from the first year, second and the third year they are now.
• They had problems with practicing minimum tillage. I told them how easy it is so long as they follow our recommendations on how to go about and the benefits of leaving crop residues on the farm.

Conclusion
We wanted them to take all the needed data from corn and beans, rice and record them on the paper sheet we provided.

These measurements are done to corn.

Plots information
Corn plot looks fine. It is clean and the ears have been filled very well. They are matured but not yet dried. Beans have already been harvested. They are in piles for sun drying but not yet threshed.

Comments
 The bean variety was changed from that of last year. It yields high however they still not sure with the market. They will see when they thresh and the buyers see them.
 The corn seed is good. It does not rot like that of last year. They like the variety.
 When asked how many use the techniques, they said most of them use the techniques but not all the techniques. The problem has been getting all the inputs especially recommended amount of fertilizers.

Conclusions
We asked them to take the yield measurements properly as recommended. They are very important for us all to know the progress of the demonstration plots and the effectiveness of the techniques taught.

Topics
1. Greetings
Pastor Lunodzo Mang’ulisa gave greetings from DIRA to the people and introduces staff of Institute of Agriculture. He encouraged people to attend seminars and follow the techniques taught, this will help them move to the next level in terms of farming.

Roger gave greetings from Gethsemane Lutheran, Saint Paul Area Synod and US Ag Advisory Committee.
2. Went through the handouts
o 1st Visit handout- DIRA and Institute of Agriculture Village Plot Agreement.
o CVP- Record of Events handout.
o Chronological Plot management of crops handout.
3. Demonstrations
We explained procedures of taking soil sample and the importance of doing soil analysis, then after we took the soil sample that was labeled and packed in small bags.

Comments

 The population is 2,500-3,000 people. Villagers have been using fertilizer such as Minjingu Phosphate, TSP, DAP for planting. Urea and CAN for second fertilizer application. Also they have been using improved corn seeds (i.e. H625, H628 and H615) and local seeds. Major crops grown in this village are corn, beans and peas. Normally they don’t experience drought, and the rainy season is December through April. Average yield for corn and beans are 5-10 bags and 1-3 bags respectively.

 Fertilizer training concept is good, because in the past they have been receiving and using fertilizers without having enough knowledge about it.

 25% of matured corn are harvested before they dry and sold as roast corn that will be shipped to cities for sell.

Questions from audience and answers
 At what month should they harvest corn in their fields?
We told them we can’t tell the exactly month but it should be harvested when the corn looks dry enough. (NB: Over here the corn are sun dried)
When we explained not to burn crop residues, what can they do when they want to clear new farms/land?
We suggested to burn because it will be tough to work in the farm with thorns, but not to burn the next season.
 They said sometimes the have a problem of little black burgs which eat both corn and beans in the field. (Normally affect farms near homes)
We answered them to use clean seeds and use proper insecticides. Also they should use chemicals for storage of grains after harvest.
 They asked about corn spacing?
We told them the corn spacing we are recommend is 60 cm by 20 cm, but we will discuss and demonstrate more about this in the next visits.
 They asked if it okay to mix CAN and UREA during second fertilizer application.
The answer is No; we are recommending not to mix because soil analysis is guiding us on what kind of fertilizer and amount should be used.
 How often should they weed their farms?
Whenever they see weeds are about 3 cm tall.

Conclusions/Recommendations
We emphasized the importance of following instruction because the success of the program depends upon them following what we instructed. They promised to follow all the instructions.

Plots information
Part of the corn plot has not performed well here. Looks like nutrients were washed away in part of the plot or for some other reasons there are nutrients unbalance in this type of soil. Beans have not been planted yet. They will be planted in August in the low land area

Comments
 Part of the corn plot has not been performing better as expected. They suggested moving the plot back to the Parish. We told them that, if they get enough land to the Parish which will not get them into conflict like that of last year, that will be good. The aim of the demonstration plot is to be seen by many people as possible. Locating it to the parish where many people have access of it will be good idea.
Conclusions
We told them to take the measurements of the corn plot according to the instructions we gave them. They should also remember to do the same in the bean plot before they harvest.

We conducted a demonstration meeting tin the Parish Church. We have big turn-out today. This is one of the congregations with many people participating in the program. Parish Pastor and District Pastor both attended the demonstration meeting.
Purpose of the visit
• Explain and demonstrate how to take yield measurement
Topics
1. Greetings
Don delivered greetings from Mount Calvary - Eagan, Saint Paul Area Synod and US Ag Advisory Committee. He spoke about the importance of getting the right yield measurements and explained why they are highly needed.
2. We went through the handouts
o 5th Visit handout
o Yield recording sheet
o Rain record sheets to know the amount of rain received during this season
3. Demonstrations
We demonstrated how to measure the 10 m row (in three different locations within the demonstration plot) for the yield determination, this was demonstrated by using a miter tape, we used spray paint to mark the demarcations within which the measurements should be taken.

Plots information
Bean plot looks very nice. The plants are matured and starting to dry. The spacing was properly followed and the pods are well filled. Corn plot looks nice too. The plants are matured and dried. The close spacing will give high yield in this demonstration plot.
Comments
 We discussed with them about the spacing and the bean variety. We told them once we have the yield, we will be in better position to know if the variety suites this area and if the spacing is appropriate.
 They said most of them in the village do practice crop rotation. They have seen from the crop rotation practice, the soil fertility of their farms is conserved.
 They asked us if we can get another bean variety to test in demonstration plot. They would like to have another variety which is not bush like type.
We told them that we shall work on that

Conclusions
The parish members are working very hard here. The pastors’ supervision is good and very encouraging. She is working hard to attain the success of the program. We told them that they have good Pastor and good management. They should take the practices taught in their farms. That will be the big success of the whole program.

Most of the members of this Parish were attending a funeral ceremony. We did not conduct a formal demonstration meeting. We went straight to the plot and started demonstrating there.
Purpose of the visit
• Explain and demonstrate how to take yield measurement
Topics
1. Greetings
Don delivered greetings from Como Park-St. Paul, Saint Paul Area Synod and US Ag Advisory Committee. He spoke about the importance of getting the right yield measurements and explained why they are highly needed.
2. Demonstrations
We demonstrated how to measure the 10 m row (in three different locations within the demonstration plot) for the yield determination, this was demonstrated by using a miter tape, we used spray paint to mark the demarcations within which the measurements should be taken. These measurements are to be taken from both corn and beans.

Plots information
Corn plot looks good; the ears are big and well filled. Spacing is okay. They are matured but not yet dried. Beans plot is good too. There few spots with of poor germination, however the plot looks better than that of last year.

Comments
 They like the bean and corn variety introduced here. Some of them said they have adopted few techniques and apply to their fields.

Conclusions
There much improvements in their plots this year. We encouraged them to keep the good work. We insisted on the importance of taking the yield data as instructed.

We arrived in Kudugala few minutes before noon. We met parish members already gathered in the church. The Pastor is not around. He has gone to US with a church group. Up on our arrival, we went direct to the plot to start demonstrations

Purpose of the visit
• Explain and demonstrate how to take yield measurement
Topics
1. Greetings
Don delivered greetings from US Ag Advisory Committee. He spoke about the importance of getting the right yield measurements and explained why they are highly needed. He told them that we need the data so that we may be able to suggest to the right variety and appropriate agronomic practices. Moreover, we are planning to expand the programs to more villages therefore organizations that may provide funds for the expansions would like to see the data too.
2. Went through the handouts
o 5th Visit handout
o Yield recording sheet
o Rain record sheets to know the amount of rain received during this season
3. Demonstrations
We demonstrated how to measure the 10 m row (in three different locations within the demonstration plot) for the yield determination, this was demonstrated by using a miter tape, we used spray paint to mark the demarcations within which the measurements should be taken.

Plots information
Corn plot looks good; the ears are big and well filled. They are matured but not yet dried. We told them that the spacing was supposed to be closer than they are now. The close spacing and fertilizers application lead into high yields. Since the spacing are a little bit wide they will not get as much yield as we expected. The plot has problems with the chicken because it is located near by the houses which keep local chicken. Chickens eat bean flowers!

Bean plot has already been harvested.

Comments
The evangelist and the church leader expressed their sincere thanks for the program. They said that, there few instructions they did not do accordingly however, there will work on them and since this is their first year, they will do better in the next year.

Conclusions
As we were laving we encouraged them to keep the good work. We told them that we expect starting from next year many people will be adopting the techniques and practices in their farms. The aim is to improve the yields.

The Pastors told us that they were late to get the information about our demonstration visit therefore there will be few people today. We told him that what we want are the people who will instruct others during the harvesting time in taking the yield measurements. We sat in the Parish office together with Pastor and few Parish leaders and discuss about the demonstration plot.
Purpose of the visit
• Explain and demonstrate how to take yield measurement
Topics
1. Introduction
Don spoke about the importance of getting the right yield measurements and explained why they are highly needed.

• Corn plot looks nice. Spacing has been properly followed, the plants are tall and the ears are well filled. Pastor has grown another plot adjacent to the demonstration plot for the purpose of demonstrating difference between the use of fertilizers, spacing and seeds.
• Bean plot looks nice too. Two types of varieties have been planted here for the purpose of experimenting the suitability of the seed varieties. There was heavy rainfall during the flowering stage which causes the reduction of the flowers, and also failure of palliation.

Comments
 They are grateful that the program has been extended into forth year. They express their gratitude to their companion congregation (King of Kings) for agreeing to sponsor the plot for the fourth year
 The bean variety has performed better than that of last year

Conclusions
We thank the Pastor and those Parish leaders for the good work they do in the demonstration plot. We asked them to properly collect data from the plots as instructed for the benefit of the whole program.

Plots information
The corn plot is very nice. The plants look good and the ears are well filled. The harvest is expected to be better than last year.
Beans look nice in one part of the plot other parts there signs of stunted growth. They told us that it is getting chill during the nights and hence the plants are affected by this severe coldness.

Comments
 The corn Variety introduced this season does not rot like that of last year. It is long duration variety hence it suits this area. They like it.
 The bean crop have been affected by severe coldness, probably they should be growing beans in the low land where it is not as cold as where the plot is now. Most of the beans growing in that area are not affected by coldness.
We told them we like to keep the plot in the same place because we want people to see the impact of building soil profile with addition of organic matter, fertilizers and crop rotation. However is they want to move the plot they should make sure that it is located in the place where people can see and should not be moved again.
Conclusions
We told them we need the yield data for the benefit of the whole program and fore success of the demonstration plots next season. We expect them to do a better job in collecting the data.

Plots information
Corn plot looks better than that of last year; the ears are big and well filled. They are matured but not yet dried. The variety introduced here is drought resistant variety.
The bean plot has been harvested. The yields are not as higher as expected. They are thinking of moving the plot to a place where it can be easily managed.
Comments
 On behave of his congregation, Pastor expressed thanks to their companion congregation for the training
 The evangelist said that people have started to adopt the techniques after seen the demonstration plot. Many people in town have small farms outside the town. In those farms, they practice the techniques taught.
Conclusions

Plots information
We drove long way to get to the plot. The road we have been using previously has been flooded therefore we had to go another toad. They have termite’s problem here. To avoid the attack of the termites to the corn crop, they had to harvest earlier. Therefore the corn plot has been harvested and preparations for the next season have started.
Beans plot is good too. This time the spacing was properly followed, and they expect a better harvest than last year.

Comments
 They said “The bean variety introduced this season is very good. We like the was it performed in the field, however we have to wait and see the way it taste and the cooking duration it taste”
We told them that in the places we have introduced it, they said it is good. However we would like to get your views when you harvest and start to use them
 They said that they still have problems with the livestock keepers because soon after they harvest, the animals are left to graze in the fields therefore they do not get to keep their crop residues for adding organic matter in their soil. We advised them to trade the crop residues with cow manures from the livestock keepers. That seems to be impossible because the livestock keepers are nomads, they do not stay in one place for a long time therefore, cow manure do not get accumulated enough.
 This season, the problem of the elephants eating crops has been decreased.

Conclusions
Pastor of this Parish is very active. He promised to work properly with his Parish members in taking the yield measurements. Their plots have much improvement this season. They said they have been getting enough water for irrigation.

Corn and beans are still in the field. They are matured and dried but not dried enough to be harvested. We told them the spacing in their field is very wide, not as recommended. This will significantly reduce the yields they are going to get. We told them we do insist close follow up of the instructions because we want them to learn from the field and the harvest.

Conclusions
We gave them instructions handouts. We told them to follow the instructions. They should use this opportunity to learn about farming so that they can go and practice with their parents when they go back to the villages.

Comments
• We told them next time they should let us know first before they take any action regarding the demo plot as we usually tell them.
• We told them to learn also from the parish because crops at the demo plots at the parish have better yield compared to plot at secondary school and the district pastor promised us to make a follow up next season to all the demo plots next year.

Conclusion
We told them to work on the instruction we give them for the success of demo plots.

The bean plot has been harvested and the measurements were taken as instructed. The yields are good.
Comments
 They asked if we what methods farmers in USA use to store their crops
Farmers in USA store their crops in big metal silos which allow warm are to pass through the grains and dry them to the right moisture content. Moreover some do put their crops in the big grain elevators which are own by co-operatives or individual businessmen. The elevators have been constructed in such a way grains are stored for long time without been damaged. However those facilities are not available in Tanzania, farmers are advised to sun dry well their crop and put storage pesticides before they store their crops.

Conclusions
This parish has been very good candidate for these agriculture training program. They work hard, follow instructions and they get good results. Pastor told us many people have been adopting the techniques. We encouraged them to keep the good work.

Long drive to Mwatasi. We met the parish members in the mass service. It is the day after Pentecost; according to the Lutheran traditions most of the congregations will hold mass service in the morning of this day. At the end of the service, the Pastor introduces us to the Parish members. After the service we started demonstration meeting in the church before we walked to the plot for further demonstration.
Purpose of the visit
• Explain and demonstrate how to take yield measurement
Topics
1. Greetings
Don delivered greetings from Trinity-Stillwater, St.

Corn is matured but not yet dried enough to be harvested and stored. The spacing are wide, we told them that this will significantly reduce the high yield we expected them to get. We recommend fertilizers applications and close spacing because that gives the high yield. The bean plants are still green. The plots are in slopes. In both plots the effect of soil erosion is obvious seen. Plants in the upper land are not as good as those in the lower land. Fertilizers might have been washed to the low land. We told them that to prevent soil erosion and fertilizers wastage, they should make terraces after every 3m.
Comments
 They said they hope the corn seed variety we have introduced will perform better because it has not started to rot as that of last year. However they are still observing the performance of the plots.
Conclusions
We told them we will be back in August. They should record the yield as instructed and keep the records. We hoe the yield data and rainfall data will help us to understand the performance of the plot and take necessary corrections.
