Purpose of the visit
The purpose of the visit is to demonstrate and give instructions on yield measurement.
Topics
Went through the handouts
• 5th Visit handout
• Yield recording sheet
• Rain record sheets to know the amount of rain received during this season
Demonstrations
We measured the 10 m row and counted the number of plants (in three different locations within the demonstration plot), number of corn ears and yield determination, this was demonstrated by using a meter tape, and the spray paint to mark the demarcations within which number of corn ears and yield data should be obtained. We told them to record the total yield of corn and beans.
Comments
• Corn variety they planted this year H 628 have good yield but they may prefer to give them H614 corn variety they planted in their first year. Depending on availability on the shops during the planting time we promised to give them variety they want.
• They requested to plant beans at the same time as they plant corn and they will need big sprayer as they will be applying pesticides several times. If we will be able to get bean seeds earlier then they will be planted at the same time.
• Harvested beans early because of nematodes eating beans; we told them next time they should let us know before they take any action.
Conclusion
We encouraged them to keep the good work. We told them next year we would like to see many of them are taking these practices to their farms. They have also to collect the data as we have instructed them
