In this visit we were accompanied by Michael Onesmo (from Group consultancy) and Itiweni Luhwago (Microfinace Institute of Tumaini University), we together with Michael and Itiweni are conducting Agricultural Market Research on the small holder farmers which is sponsored by Thrivent Financial services for Lutherans (USA). In Tungamalenga we meet Dr. Randy Hurley and Amy Schulz from Shepherd of the valley, Apple Valley (USA). The group from Shepherd of the valley is here to visit their companion congregation and Dr. Randy and Amy are part of this group.
Purpose of the visit
• Bean planting demonstration
• Fertilizer applications demonstration
• Bean seeds and fertilizers delivery
Topics
1. Going through handout with attendees
4th Visit handout
2. Demonstrations
We demonstrated how to plant beans in the appropriate spacing and how to make the fertilizer application to the beans. We also demonstrated how to make the second application of fertilizer to the corn.
3. Delivery
Type/Variety Amount
Bean seeds Wanja 30kg
Fertilizers NPK 2 bags
CAN 2 bags
Pesticides Thionex ½ litres
4. Plots
Corn
Corn plot does not look good. There has been poor plant germination and replanting was delayed. Moreover spacing was not properly followed. Plants are yellow due to this area being very sunny and dry. Since the plot is in the irrigated land we told them to start irrigating it as soon as possible. We also told them to make the second application of fertilizer since most plants are at knee high.
Bean
We have just delivered bean seeds; they are planning to plant soon
Rice
The rice plot has been plowed. The seedlings are tall enough to start transplanting (They are about 6inches). They are planning to do transplanting next week. They said this season they have changed the seed variety from “India rangi” of last season to “Super Zambia”. The reason is the former did not have good market though yields were high.
Conclusion
We told Pastor to encourage people to attend in the demonstration meeting. Moreover since the corn plot does not look well; we told them that it won’t attract many people to adopt the techniques. We also insisted that there should be good management of the plots so that people are attracted to adopt the techniques. We asked them to do a better job in the bean plot. Recommendations should be followed.
