Corn and Bean Plots Discussion
Corn was planted on December 13, 2012. The plants look good. We told them weeding should be done soon to allow plants to grow healthily. Spacing has been followed, though not in all parts of the farm. Few areas the spacing is wider than recommended. Beans have not been planted yet. They will be planted soon as this is the time to plants leguminous crops in this area. We instructed than to prepare the land for planting bean by removing weeds.
Questions/Comments from Audience
Are we going to apply fertilizers in bean plot too?
Yes, you should apply fertilizers in the bean plot at the time of the planting. However, in bean fertilizer application will be done once.
Are the fertilizers containing chemicals that might have side effect to the human being when crops are consumed?
Fertilizers are scientifically synthesized in the industries. Yes they are chemical however this chemical degraded in the soil to release nutrients to the plants. As far as it is known these nutrients do not have side effects to the human beings when plants are consumed.
When should we plant beans
This is the time. As soon as you prepare your plot please plant the beans
Sometimes we experience insect eating the roots or shoots of the bean plants and cause the plant to dry. What should we do?
To control those insects, please spay pesticides (Thionex) 3 – 5 days after germination of the plants. Spraying at this time will kill the flies that lay eggs which then develop into bean maggot and kill the plant
Conclusion
The demonstration plots here have a supervision of the person appointed to do this work who is known as Project co-coordinator Ms. Hilda Mella. We assumed the plot in this School will have success comparing with plots in other schools because of this system of supervision. We told them that whenever they have problem with the plot, they should contact us for advice and instructions.
