Wasa - CVP Visit Report - Jan 11-2013

2011CVP Companion Village Project 4rd Visit, Year Two January 11, 2013 Village Wasa Pastor Jahudi Mkung’e Companion Fish Lake Lutheran, Lake Park Attendees 14 Weather Rainy Reporters Gabriel, Roger and Rev. Mang’ulisa We met parish members working in the demonstration plots. They were doing weeding in both corn and beans. Purpose of the visit • To deliver fertilizers for second application and pesticides Topics 1. Greetings Roger delivered greetings from St. Paul Area Synod and Fish Lake Lutheran, Lake Park 2. Review of the handouts  4th visit instructions • Discussion about germination, Replanting and Pest • Weeding after planting • Monthly weeding after tasseling 3. Demonstration on second fertilizer application on corn We demonstrated ways to apply fertilizers in corn as the second application. Farmers participated in apply fertilizers in their demonstration plots. 4. Insecticide Application. We instructed them on how to apply the insecticide on both corn and beans and the recommended rates to apply. 5. Delivery. We delivered fertilizers and insecticides Item Fertilizers for Corn Pesticides Variety/Type NPK Thionex Amount 2Bag 1 bottle Demonstration plots Corn was planted November 17, 2012 and beans December 01, 2012. Both corn and bean plots look nice. Spacing has been properly followed and the management of the plots is as recommended. Last year, the plots were affected by heavy rainfall when at the early stages. This year rain has been normal. Pastor said that they expected better performance of the plots than that of last year. There is no disease symptoms in the plants, however some of the corn plants have insect holes indicating that there are leaf eating insects. We told them they should spray pesticides as soon as possible. Conclusion The plots are good, and plants are doing well. We instructed tham to apply fertilizers in the corn plot because this is the right moment. Pastor said that they are planning to do it in the next day.
