Purpose of the visit
• Explain and demonstrate how to take yield measurement
Topics
1. Greetings
Don delivered greetings from Christ Lutheran-Lake Amo, Saint Paul Area Synod and US Ag Advisory Committee. He spoke about the importance of getting the right yield measurements and explained why they are highly needed.
2. Went through the handouts
o 5th Visit handout
o Yield recording sheet
o Rain record sheets to know the amount of rain received during this season
3. Demonstrations
We demonstrated how to measure the 10 m row (in three different locations within the demonstration plot) for the yield determination, this was demonstrated by using a miter tape, we used spray paint to mark the demarcations within which the measurements should be taken.
Plots information
The corn plot is very nice. The plants look good and the ears are well filled. The harvest is expected to be better than last year.
Beans look nice in one part of the plot other parts there signs of stunted growth. They told us that it is getting chill during the nights and hence the plants are affected by this severe coldness.
Comments
The corn Variety introduced this season does not rot like that of last year. It is long duration variety hence it suits this area. They like it.
The bean crop have been affected by severe coldness, probably they should be growing beans in the low land where it is not as cold as where the plot is now. Most of the beans growing in that area are not affected by coldness.
We told them we like to keep the plot in the same place because we want people to see the impact of building soil profile with addition of organic matter, fertilizers and crop rotation. However is they want to move the plot they should make sure that it is located in the place where people can see and should not be moved again.
Conclusions
We told them we need the yield data for the benefit of the whole program and fore success of the demonstration plots next season. We expect them to do a better job in collecting the data.
