The headmistress is not around; she had a meeting to attend in Iringa Town. We met other teachers and discussed with them the demonstration plot. Before the demonstration meeting we visited the demo plot in the Secondary School. Later on the demonstration meeting was conducted in the Parish church which is very close to the School. Both students and Parish members attended in the same place.
Purpose of the visit
• Bean planting demonstration
• Fertilizer applications demonstration
• Bean seeds and fertilizers delivery
Topics
1. Going through handout with attendees
4th Visit handout
2. Demonstrations
We demonstrated how to plant beans in the appropriate spacing and how to make the fertilizer application to the beans. We also demonstrated how to make the second application of fertilizer to the corn.
3. Delivery
Corn seeds, bean seeds and fertilizers for the first application were delivered in the October visit. Today we delivered fertilizers (CAN) for the second application in corn, pesticides and sprayer pump
Type/Variety Amount
Fertilizer CAN 2 bags
Pesticides Thionex 1 liters
Sprayer pump Knapsack Capacity 16 liters
4. Plots
Corn
There has been poor germination in this plot. The spacing was not properly followed. We told them the importance of following instructions that lead to a nice demo plot. People will be attracted to lean from a nice plot.
Bean
We instructed them to begin the preparation for the bean plot. Beans are planted late in the season in this area.
Comments /Questions
While doing replanting, is it required to reapply fertilizers?
No, it not required to reapply fertilizers. Since fertilizer was applied at the planting time, it is expected to be in the soil at the time of replanting
How long should I wait before do replanting?
One week after the beginning of germination, replant where seeds have not germinated
Conclusion
We told teachers that we need the plot to be taken care of very well. The plot is the learning tool to them and the students. We expect them to do a better job in the bean demo plot.
